MANCHESTER — The culinary tastemakers at the prestigious James Beard Foundation have put Shady Glen on the organization’s 2012 “America’s Classics” list.
Since 1948, “families in the fertile dairy country of central Connecticut have made pilgrimages to the sandwich counter, soda fountain, and booths of Shady Glen,” the foundation said in a statement announcing its selection this week.
While the restaurant, which is owned by William and Annette Hoch, has house-mixed sodas and locally produced ice cream, the real draw is the Bernice Original: several pieces of yellow, crispy American cheese on top of a hamburger patty. Read more here.
